Church Leaders

Baptists believe that, under God, the government of the local church is best done by church members meeting together in a spirit of prayer and friendship to discuss and agree on what God wants them to do. In a Baptist Church every member is encouraged to be involved and use their gifts.

The Church Meeting appoints the minister and a group of deacons to take responsibility for day-to-day spiritual and practical leadership of the church.

Angharad, or Aggie as she is better known, has been attending Bluntisham Baptist Church since she was 5, and after a brief stint at University in Durham returned to the area.

She now works as a forensic scientist and says it has little resemblance to CSI.

Aggie has recently joined the diaconate as deacon for youth and children and is also involved in Sunday School and music group.

Her hobbies include a lot of reading and watching films.

MISSION - representing God locally, nationally and globally, by participating in His mission through praying, giving and going

Malcolm Lee
Deacon for World Mission

Malcolm lives in the Wood End part of the village having moved to Bluntisham in 1983. Married to Lynn and they have 3 grown up children who are all away at university (sometimes) Malcolm works in scientific sales and marketing and in his spare time he enjoys football and golf with the hope of taking up fishing again soon.

Malcolm is involved in world mission and a regular visitor to Albania on various mission tours. Mission is something which changes the lives of all those who are involved and has become a passion that we need to continue to develop.

Graham Harris
Graham Harris
Deacon for Evangelism

Graham says that Grab A Granny night in Tots Disco, Southend, changed his life (you had to be over 25 to get in, hence the nickname). It was there that he met and started going out with Janet, who took him along to Tillingham Congregational Church in Essex and then, when they married in 1982, to South Woodham Evangelical Church, also in Essex.

Graham says: "Every word spoken at every service I attended seemed to have relevance for me, and it gradually reached the point where I decided I either had to accept that Jesus was reaching out to me or turn my back and reject him. When the Saltmine Mission Team visited us in 1987 one of the speakers prayed a prayer of acknowledgement and forgiveness and it was at that point that I knew I couldn't reject Jesus anymore".

Since moving to Somersham in the late 1990s with Janet and their now grown-up children, Jack and Grace, Graham has been a Sunday School teacher at Bluntisham Baptist Church as well as serving in a few other areas. They now live in Colne.

Graham regularly plays football for the church team, especially during the church's mini-mission trip to Tirana, Albania. Graham says: "In serving God we work best when we work as a team. That's my prayer for the Deacons and the church as a whole".

Sheena Glanville
Deacon for worship

Sheena is married to Charles and they have two children, Josh and Chloe who attend St. Helen’s school. Sheena also has two ‘twenty something’ children – Louise, an actor and writer for a theatre company, and Richard who works in IT development.

Sheena has attended Baptist churches all her life and was baptised at the age of 16. Over the years she has been involved in Sunday school work and choirs and was also a Worship Leader at Sandy Baptist church. ‘I have always had a real sense of God’s care and love, especially through the difficult times in life. He is just not prepared to let me go and I am grateful for that.’

Sheena moved to Bluntisham from Sandy in 2003. Since then she has been involved in the music group, leading bible study at Space and helping at (and recently taking over the management of) the Beacon Café.

MINISTRY - enabling people to use their gifts to serve God, by serving each other, our community and those in need

John Holmes
Deacon for Ministry

John is married to Joy in 1969 and has three children and two granddaughters. He was baptised in 1987, moving to St. Ives in 1989 and joining the church in Bluntisham. He helps leading worship, Sunday Half-hour, part of the welcoming and visitation teams, and helps in the café (looks great in the plastic apron and pink marigolds).

He retired three years ago after spending over 40 years occupied in transport and, latterly, work on the new developments. He is now involved, with others, in seeking to build churches in the new communities, the EBA, Community Transport, and, occasionally, driving the Connections Bus.

Aside from his interest in transport and community building, he is a football supporter, if a Leicester City season ticket holder can be so characterised.

Phil Taylor
Phil Taylor
Deacon for Fabric and Facilities

Phil is married to Julie and they have three children; Jamie, Sam and Ella. They have lived in Bluntisham since 1999. Phil works in the banking industry and helps companies with their international trade.

Despite working in financial services, Phil likes to be practical; be this building patios, fitting kitchens, or generally repairing things. He loves food – both cooking and eating! He enjoys cycling, but admits that he needs to turns the pedals more often to get fit.

Following a Holiday Bible Club celebration service, Phil says he felt a real sense of belonging within the fellowship and attended the next Alpha course with Julie. He was baptised on Easter Sunday 2008. He is part of the Technical Team, a Sunday School helper and lately part of the Media Team.

Phil says "Coming to faith in Christ has had an immense impact on me - I would love to use my experience to help bring others to faith".

Peter Thatcher
Peter Thatcher
Assistant Treasurer &
Deacon for Administration

Peter is married to Helen and they have three grown up sons Nick, Ben and Adam. They moved to Bluntisham in 2010, immediately feeling a sense of belonging and purpose in both the church and village. “We truly believe that God brought us here for a reason.”

Peter is a Chartered Accountant, although has spent most of his professional life running his own business providing training in finance, business and management skills. In his spare time, when he manages to avoid the garden chores, Peter spends all the time he can with any or all of his three sons, which typically involves something to do with sport, and he has even come out of retirement to join other church members, and his sons, playing football on a Wednesday night.

Before moving to Bluntisham, Peter was heavily involved in the leadership of an ecumenical church in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire and feels that it is important that Christians work closely together to communicate God’s message.
